About the Item
Black pencil drawing, stamped from the widow’s sale in 1894 (Lugt L. 3728), dimensions 7x10.2cm. It is most likely the first thought for this subject, circa 1846.
On the reverse side, there is a drawing of a standing peasant beside his winnowing basket, which shows Millet was already thinking of representing rural peasant scenes.
Amongst these pictures are included both the oil painting of which this study is likely to have been the first thought, "Hylas et les nymphes', at the Kroller Muller museum, as well as one of the preliminary charcoal on canvas drawings of the said oil painting, exhibited at the Millet Museum in Barbizon.
